Commander Keen in Invasion of the Vorticons

The 1990 shareware hit that proved a PC could do smooth-scrolling platform games, and launched id Software.

Billy Blaze, an eight-year-old genius, builds a spaceship and becomes Commander Keen. When the Vorticons steal parts of his ship on Mars, he has to get them back, and then stop an invasion of Earth.

The Commander Keen Complete Pack on Steam includes all three Vorticons episodes.

About the game

Keen jumps, bounces on his pogo stick and zaps enemies with his raygun across colourful, scrolling levels.

It came in three episodes. The first was given away as shareware, and players paid for the other two.

History

Its success funded id Software, which went on to make Wolfenstein 3D and Doom.
