Wing Commander

Chris Roberts' 1990 space combat game, which played like a war movie and pushed PCs to their limits.

Humanity is at war with the cat-like Kilrathi. As a young pilot on the carrier Tiger's Claw, fly mission after mission, get to know your wingmen in the bar between sorties, and help turn the tide.

Sold on GOG together with Wing Commander II.

About the game

Dogfights are fast, with big, detailed ships and your wingman shouting over the radio. Wingmen can die, and they stay dead.

The campaign branches: win and you push forward, lose and the war goes badly, with different missions as a result.

History

Created by Chris Roberts and released by Origin Systems in 1990 for DOS, then for the Amiga and other platforms.

It was a huge success and grew into a long series, including Wing Commander III with live-action film scenes.
