Star Control II (The Ur-Quan Masters)

Toys for Bob's 1992 space epic, often named one of the greatest games ever, and free today as The Ur-Quan Masters.

Earth has been enslaved by the Ur-Quan and sealed under a shield. Returning from a distant colony with an ancient alien ship, you must rebuild an alliance of alien races and free humanity.

The creators released the game as The Ur-Quan Masters, free and open source, in 2002.

About the game

You explore a huge galaxy, land on planets for resources and talk to a cast of brilliantly written alien races, each funny, tragic or menacing in its own way.

Fights use fast, two-ship arcade battles from the first Star Control, and there is a separate versus mode for two players.

History

Created by Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III at Toys for Bob and published by Accolade in 1992 for DOS, later on the 3DO.

In 2002 Ford and Reiche released the 3DO version's source code, and fans turned it into The Ur-Quan Masters, which runs on modern systems.
