Master of Orion

Steve Barcia's 1993 space empire game, the one that gave the '4X' genre its name: explore, expand, exploit, exterminate.

Pick one of ten alien races and start with a single star system. Colonise new worlds, research technology, design your own warships and out-fight or out-vote your rivals for control of the galaxy.

Sold on GOG together with Master of Orion II.

About the game

Each race has its own strengths, from the Psilons' science to the Bulrathi's ground troops, which changes how you play.

You can win by conquering everyone, or by being elected leader of the galaxy by the other races.

History

Designed by Steve Barcia at SimTex and published by MicroProse in 1993.

A preview of the game coined the term '4X', which is still used for the genre. Master of Orion II followed in 1996.
