X-COM: UFO Defense

Julian and Nick Gollop's 1994 alien-invasion strategy game, still one of the most loved strategy games ever made.

UFOs are appearing over Earth. As commander of X-COM, a secret international force, build bases, shoot down alien craft and send squads to the crash sites, while your scientists unlock the aliens' secrets.

Sold on GOG. Known in Europe as UFO: Enemy Unknown.

About the game

On the world map you manage money, research and interceptors in real time. On the ground, missions switch to tense turn-based squad combat.

Soldiers have names and grow more skilled, so losing a veteran to a single alien shot really hurts.

History

Designed by Julian and Nick Gollop at Mythos Games and published by MicroProse in 1994.

It inspired a long series, including the modern XCOM games from Firaxis.
