Serious Sam: The First Encounter

Croteam's 2001 old-school shooter from Croatia: huge open arenas, hundreds of enemies at once, and a headless screaming kamikaze.

In the future, the alien warlord Mental is wiping out humanity. Sam 'Serious' Stone is sent back in time to ancient Egypt to find alien technology that could turn the war around.

Sold on GOG as the classic version. Made for adults: it is violent.

About the game

It is pure arcade action: run backwards, keep shooting and never stop moving as waves of monsters rush you across giant temples and deserts.

Its own engine could draw enormous outdoor spaces and crowds of enemies that other shooters of the time could not.

History

Developed by Croteam and published by Gathering of Developers in 2001, at a budget price.

The Second Encounter followed the next year, and HD remakes came out in 2009 and 2010.
