Spelunky (Classic)

Derek Yu's 2008 freeware cave-diving platformer, where every run is different and death is never far away.

A spelunker sets off into caves full of treasure, traps and monsters. Each level is randomly made, so no two trips are the same, and dying means starting again from the top.

Freeware.

About the game

Ropes, bombs and a shotgun help, but it is easy to lose them, and yourself, to a single mistake.

Shopkeepers, damsels and secret areas reward players who learn the rules.

History

Made by Derek Yu in Game Maker and released for free on Windows in 2008.

It was remade as Spelunky in 2012, and Spelunky 2 followed in 2020. The original is still free on the official site.
