The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Infocom's 1984 text adventure, co-written by Douglas Adams himself. Famous for being very funny and very, very hard.

Your house is about to be knocked down to make way for a bypass, and the Earth is about to be demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Escape with your friend Ford Prefect and try to survive the galaxy, using nothing but typed commands.

Official illustrated edition, free to play on the BBC website.

About the game

You play Arthur Dent and type what you want to do in plain English. The game follows the book loosely, then goes its own way, and it happily lies to you, mocks you and lets you lose without telling you.

The puzzle of getting the Babel fish into your ear is one of the most famous, and most infamous, puzzles in gaming history.

History

Written by Douglas Adams with Infocom's Steve Meretzky and released in 1984 for almost every computer of the day. It became one of Infocom's best-selling games.

In 2004 BBC Radio 4 put a free web version online, and in 2014 BBC Radio 4 Extra released an illustrated 30th anniversary edition.
