King's Quest: Quest for the Crown

Roberta Williams' 1984 fairy-tale adventure: the game that started Sierra's Quest series and showed what animated adventure games could be.

The kingdom of Daventry is dying. Old King Edward sends the young knight Sir Graham to recover three lost treasures: a magic mirror, a magic shield and a chest that is never empty. Bring them back, and the throne is yours.

Sold on GOG together with King's Quest II and III.

About the game

Instead of still pictures, King's Quest let you walk Sir Graham around animated screens, behind trees and in front of them. You type commands like 'open door' or 'take dagger' to act.

The land is full of fairy-tale characters, from a witch in a gingerbread house to a troll under a bridge, and many puzzles have more than one solution.

History

Designed by Roberta Williams at Sierra On-Line and first released in 1984 for the IBM PCjr, on a commission from IBM. It was soon ported to the IBM PC, Apple II and other computers.

Its success launched one of the biggest adventure series ever, and paved the way for Sierra's Space Quest, Police Quest and Leisure Suit Larry. A remake with new graphics followed in 1990.
