About the game
You can win two ways: by war, capturing Doomdark's citadel of Ushgarak, or by quest, guiding Morkin to the Ice Crown. Most players try to do both at once, which is what makes it so tense.
Instead of a map, you see the world as a first-person panorama from wherever each character stands. Singleton called the technique 'landscaping', and it gave the game over 32,000 different views.
History
Published by Beyond Software for the ZX Spectrum in 1984, and later ported to the Amstrad CPC and Commodore 64. A sequel, Doomdark's Revenge, followed in 1985.
Developer Chris Wild later brought the game to modern computers and phones. Mike Singleton died in 2012, and the game is still remembered as one of the great British games of the 1980s.
