Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny

Richard Garriott's 1988 follow-up to Ultima IV, which asked a hard question: what happens when virtue becomes law?

Lord British has vanished in the underworld, and the regent Blackthorn now rules Britannia. He has turned the virtues into harsh laws, enforced by the dreaded Shadowlords. Return as the Avatar, join the resistance and bring the true king home.

Sold on GOG as Ultima 4+5+6. Ultima IV is also free on its own.

About the game

Britannia feels alive: people follow daily routines, sleep at night and lock their doors. You talk to them by typing keywords, and many have their own stories.

The world is darker than in Ultima IV. Doing the right thing can make you an outlaw, which makes the game's moral questions far more interesting.

History

Designed by Richard Garriott and released by Origin Systems in 1988, first for the Apple II, then the Commodore 64, DOS and more.

It was the second game in what fans call the Age of Enlightenment trilogy, finished by Ultima VI in 1990.
