Wasteland

Interplay's 1988 post-apocalyptic role-playing game, and the spiritual ancestor of Fallout.

Decades after a nuclear war, the Desert Rangers keep what little order is left in the American Southwest. Lead a squad of Rangers into the ruins to investigate strange attacks, and uncover a threat far bigger than raiders.

GOG sells the original 1988 game. A separate 2020 remaster is also available.

About the game

Problems can be solved in many ways: shoot, talk, pick a lock, climb, or blow a hole in the wall. Your choices change the world, and the world remembers.

Much of the story was printed in a paragraph book that came with the game. When the game told you to, you read the matching numbered paragraph.

History

Produced by Brian Fargo at Interplay and published by Electronic Arts in 1988 for the Apple II, Commodore 64 and DOS.

Its ideas lived on in Fallout in 1997, and Fargo's inXile Entertainment later made Wasteland 2, Wasteland 3 and a remaster of the original.
