King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder!

Sierra's 1990 blockbuster, with hand-painted 256-colour art and the switch from typing to point-and-click.

The evil wizard Mordack has shrunk King Graham's castle, family and all, and carried it away. With the help of Cedric, a talking owl, Graham sets off across the land of Serenia to get them back.

Sold on GOG together with King's Quest IV and VI.

About the game

Instead of typing, you click icons to walk, look, act and talk. It made the game far easier to pick up, and Sierra used the same idea for years.

The backgrounds were painted by hand and scanned in, a big step up in how computer games looked.

History

Designed by Roberta Williams and released by Sierra On-Line in 1990. It became one of the best-selling computer games of its time.

A CD-ROM version with full voice acting followed in 1991.
