King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella

Roberta Williams' 1988 adventure, one of the first games with a female hero, and the first to show off Sierra's new engine and sound card music.

King Graham is dying. His daughter Rosella is carried by a fairy to the land of Tamir, where a magic fruit could save him. But the fairy queen Genesta is dying too, and the wicked witch Lolotte stands in the way.

Sold on GOG together with King's Quest V and VI.

About the game

Tamir has a day and night cycle, with different characters and dangers after dark, from ghosts in the graveyard to a haunted mansion.

It still uses typed commands, but with more detailed graphics and a real musical score for those who owned a sound card.

History

Designed by Roberta Williams and released by Sierra On-Line in 1988. It was the first game on Sierra's new SCI engine, and it helped sell early sound cards.

It was released in two versions, one on the new engine and one on the old AGI engine for older computers.
