Loom

Brian Moriarty's 1990 fairy tale, an adventure where magic is music and every spell is a melody.

Bobbin Threadbare, a young member of the Guild of Weavers, wakes on his birthday to find his guild transformed into swans. With only a magic distaff, he sets out across a world on the edge of ruin.

Sold on GOG.

About the game

There's no inventory. Instead, you learn short tunes called drafts by listening to the world, then play them on your distaff to open, heal, dye or even unmake things.

It is short, gentle and beautiful, with music adapted from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.

History

Designed by Brian Moriarty, formerly of Infocom, and released by Lucasfilm Games in 1990.

A CD-ROM version with full voice acting followed in 1992.
