Ultima VII: The Black Gate

Origin's 1992 high point of the Ultima series: a living world, a murder mystery and a villain who talks to you directly.

Two hundred years have passed in Britannia. The Avatar returns to find a gruesome ritual murder in Trinsic, a popular new movement called the Fellowship, and a voice called the Guardian whispering from the shadows.

Sold on GOG as Ultima 7: The Complete Edition, including Serpent Isle and both add-ons.

About the game

Almost everything can be picked up and used: you can bake bread, forge swords and stack crates to climb walls. People keep schedules, work and sleep.

The story starts as a detective case and grows into a dark look at cults and easy answers.

History

Developed and published by Origin Systems in 1992, with Richard Garriott as the series creator.

Serpent Isle followed in 1993, and fans still play it today through modern engines like Exult.
