Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss

Blue Sky Productions' 1992 marvel: a fully 3D dungeon you could look around, jump through and swim in, months before Doom.

Accused of kidnapping a baron's daughter, the Avatar is thrown into the Stygian Abyss, a vast dungeon where the remains of a failed colony live alongside monsters. Find the girl and prove your innocence.

Sold on GOG together with Ultima Underworld II.

About the game

The Abyss is home to whole communities of goblins, lizardmen and humans, with their own politics, trades and quests.

Magic is cast by combining rune stones, and you can make notes right on the automap.

History

Developed by Blue Sky Productions, later Looking Glass Studios, and published by Origin Systems in 1992.

Its team went on to make System Shock and Thief, and inspired the creators of Deus Ex.
