Tyrian

Eclipse Software's 1995 vertical shoot-'em-up, one of the best ever made for the PC, with a ship you upgrade between levels.

Trent Hawkins, a terraforming pilot on the planet Tyrian, sees his friend murdered by the corporation Microsol. Now they want him dead too. Fight back, one level at a time.

GOG offers Tyrian 2000, the 1999 updated edition with an extra episode, for free.
