Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

Firaxis's 1999 science-fiction strategy game, a spiritual sequel to Civilization with some of the best writing in the genre.

A colony ship reaches the planet Chiron, but its crew splits into seven factions with very different ideas about humanity's future. Lead one of them, and discover that the planet itself may be alive.

Sold on GOG, with the Alien Crossfire expansion.

About the game

Each faction stands for an ideology, from science to faith to profit, and their leaders quote each other in short texts that build the world.

You design your own units and choose social policies, and the alien planet fights back if you pollute it.

History

Designed by Brian Reynolds with Sid Meier at Firaxis Games and published by Electronic Arts in 1999.

The Alien Crossfire expansion added two alien factions later the same year.
