Official freeware Text adventure 1986 DOS

Beyond the Titanic

Scott Miller's 1986 text adventure, written before he founded Apogee, and one of the first games he ever sold.

You survive the sinking of the Titanic, but your adventure is only beginning. Swept far from the wreck, you find yourself in a place much stranger than the bottom of the Atlantic, and you have to type your way out.

Released as freeware by Apogee / 3D Realms, with the source code.

About the game

It is a classic Infocom-style text adventure: you read descriptions, type commands like "go north" or "take rope", and solve puzzles to move on.

It starts as a historical disaster story and turns into science fiction, which makes it a fun curiosity from the early shareware days.

History

Written by Scott Miller and released in 1986, before he founded Apogee Software, the company behind Commander Keen and Duke Nukem.

Apogee re-released it as freeware in March 1998, and in 2009 3D Realms released its source code as free software.
