Kingdom of Kroz

Scott Miller's 1987 text-mode dungeon game: the very first Apogee release, and the start of the shareware revolution that led to Commander Keen and Duke Nukem.

Somewhere in the Kingdom of Kroz lies a priceless amulet. Make your way through level after level of monsters, traps, gems and secret passages, built entirely from text characters, and bring it back.

The whole Kroz series was released as freeware by Apogee / 3D Realms in 2009.

About the game

Every monster, wall and treasure is a coloured letter or symbol on screen. Monsters home in on you as you move, so every step is a little tactical decision.

Whips, teleport scrolls and gems for extra health are your tools. Levels mix action with puzzles, and many hide secrets for players who experiment.

History

Written by Scott Miller and released in 1987. Kingdom of Kroz was given away free, and players who liked it paid to order the rest of the series, the model Apogee became famous for.

Apogee released all seven Kroz games as freeware in March 2009, along with their source code.
