Official freeware Text adventure 1987 Sci-fi

Supernova

Scott Miller's 1987 science-fiction text adventure, an Infocom-style puzzle game from the man who would soon found Apogee.

A science-fiction adventure told entirely in text. Explore an alien world, solve its puzzles and find a way to stop a disaster on a cosmic scale, typing every move.

Released as freeware by Apogee / 3D Realms, with the source code.

About the game

Like the Infocom games it was inspired by, you type commands in plain English and read the results. Careful mapping and note-taking pay off.

It is a bigger, more ambitious game than Miller's earlier Beyond the Titanic, and a window into the shareware scene just before it exploded.

History

Written by Scott Miller and released in 1987, before he founded Apogee Software.

Apogee re-released it as freeware in March 1998, and in 2009 3D Realms released its source code as free software.
