King's Quest III: To Heir Is Human

Roberta Williams' darkest King's Quest yet, from 1986: a slave boy, a cruel wizard and a spell book you have to follow to the letter.

Gwydion has spent his whole life as the servant of the wizard Manannan, who kills his servants when they turn eighteen. With his birthday coming, Gwydion must secretly learn magic, escape, and find out who he really is.

Sold on GOG together with King's Quest I and II.

About the game

The first part is a race against time: while Manannan sleeps or travels, you sneak around his house collecting ingredients. If he catches you with them, it's over.

Spells are cast by following recipes from the game's manual step by step, a clever kind of copy protection that made you feel like a real apprentice wizard.

History

Designed by Roberta Williams and released by Sierra On-Line in 1986. It surprised players by starring a new hero, and ties back to King Graham in its ending.

Gwydion turned out to be Prince Alexander, who became a main character later in the series.
