The Fool's Errand

Cliff Johnson's 1987 puzzle masterpiece: a storybook, a treasure map and dozens of puzzles that all turn out to be pieces of one giant riddle.

A wandering Fool seeks his fortune in the Land of Tarot. The Sun gives him a scrambled map and sends him to find the Lost 14 Treasures of the World, but the High Priestess has other plans.

Offered free of charge by its creator, Cliff Johnson, on his website.

About the game

The story is told in short chapters, each unlocked by solving a puzzle: word searches, jigsaws, cryptograms, card games and stranger things.

As you go, the pieces of the scrambled map come together, and the final meta-puzzle ties everything you have seen into one satisfying whole.

History

Created by Cliff Johnson and released for the Macintosh in 1987, then ported to DOS, Amiga and Atari ST.

Johnson later made it available as shareware in 2002, and then free of charge. A sequel, The Fool and His Money, arrived in 2012.
