The Secret of Monkey Island

Ron Gilbert's 1990 pirate comedy, the adventure game many people still call the best ever made.

Guybrush Threepwood wants to be a pirate. To prove himself on Mêlée Island he must pass three trials, but then the ghost pirate LeChuck kidnaps Governor Elaine Marley, and Guybrush has to sail to the mysterious Monkey Island.

The Special Edition lets you switch to the original 1990 version with one key.

About the game

Insult sword fighting, where the sharpest comeback wins the duel, is one of gaming's most loved ideas.

Unlike many adventures of its time, you can't die or get stuck for good, so you are free to explore and laugh.

History

Created by Ron Gilbert with Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman at Lucasfilm Games and released in 1990, first for the Atari ST and DOS.

A Special Edition with new art and voices came out in 2009, and the series continued for decades, up to Return to Monkey Island in 2022.
