Alone in the Dark

Frédérick Raynal's 1992 haunted-house game, the first 3D survival horror and the blueprint for Resident Evil.

Jeremy Hartwood, owner of the mansion Derceto, has hanged himself. Play detective Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood, and explore the house, as creatures from the Cthulhu Mythos come for you.

Sold on GOG as Alone in the Dark: The Trilogy 1+2+3.

About the game

3D characters move through pre-drawn rooms seen from fixed, cinematic camera angles, a style later made famous by Resident Evil.

Books and notes around the house tell a creepy story, and many monsters are best avoided rather than fought.

History

Created by Frédérick Raynal at Infogrames and released in 1992 for DOS.

Two sequels followed in 1993 and 1994, and the series was rebooted several times later.
